Presenter Guidance

General Overview

Abstract submissions has now closed. Congratulations to all our accepted presenters! We can’t wait to welcome you to glorious Dundee!

WCDC2019 will feature both submitted and invited sessions that address the conference theme of ‘People, Place and Power’. Community representatives, practitioners, policy makers and academics at all levels of experience will be sharing their knowledge and expertise. The organising group of WCDC2019 is looking forward to seeing the wide range of oral presentations, practice workshops, poster presentations, film screenings and visual arts responses that reflect on the conference theme and encourage dialogue about the key conference questions.

If you have been accepted to present at the conference, you will receive detailed guidance about how to prepare your presentation, workshop, poster, film or arts response prior to the conference. A summary of the key points for the various formats is below. We are looking forward to welcoming people from a wide range of professional and experiential backgrounds so we encourage all presenters to reflect on how their work connects to community development practice, pedagogy and/or policy to ensure that WCDC2019 creates a forum for open, reflective dialogue on the complex interrelationship between people, place and power in global community development practice.

The working language of the conference will be English. If participants require language assistance please let the organising committee know in advance of the conference. If required, we will work with you to develop ideas and to assist you in preparing for the conference.

Oral Presentations

The focus of this conference is on creating spaces for dialogue, engagement with new ideas and making meaningful connection. All oral presentations will therefore be strictly limited to a maximum of 7 minutes per presentation, excluding questions. Oral presentations will be in a series of parallel sessions throughout the conference. Each parallel session will be one hour and have a maximum of four presentations. This means that at least half of each session is protected time for dialogue.

We recognise that short presentations are challenging to prepare. But as conference organisers we have consciously decided to lay down this challenge! Our time together is short and therefore time is precious. Time can so easily be used badly and swallowed up by the voices of the few. Timescales will therefore be strictly adhered to in order to ensure that we maintain inclusive dialogues throughout the conference. Our commitment to you is to ensure that time for dialogue is fiercely protected and confidently facilitated. We ask for your commitment to rise to our challenge and ensure you remain within your allocated 7 minutes to ensure that our time together is energising for all.

Presentations should use a maximum of 7 slides and ensure that the content focuses on:

  1. analysing the actual or potential impact of the work, and
  2. identifying the ways in which their work is relevant for community development globally.

We encourage all presenters to also reflect on the international relevance of their work. Times for each session will be strictly adhered to in order to ensure that at least half of each session is dedicated to facilitated discussion.

Please avoid lengthy context-specific descriptions unless these are required for the audience to understand your work. We also encourage you to reflect on the international relevance of your work.

Please remember that how you utilise your 7 minutes is entirely your choice – our priority is that presentations create discussion, feed curiosity and challenge current thinking, so if you wish to be creative, please do so!

Revision of Titles and Abstracts
Please review your submitted abstracts and titles and amend as necessary to ensure that these accurately reflect your presentation. This is particularly important if you originally submitted to run a workshop but will now be delivering an oral presentation. If you previously received feedback recommending revisions to ensure your abstract responds more directly to the conference themes, please utilise the Conference Themes and Reflective Questions on the conference website for guidance as to the focus of the conference and ensure that your abstract responds effectively to these priority areas (https://www.wcdc2019.org.uk/call-for-papers/).

Please send all revisions to info@iacdglobal.org by Friday 7th June 2019 so that we can ensure that the programme accurately reflects your presentation. Please note that we are unable to guarantee that any revisions received after this date will be in the conference programme.

Practice Workshops

Practice workshops are an opportunity to share the methods and/or outcomes of completed or on-going work with a wide audience. Workshops must be participative and allow for as much exchange of practice and learning between participants as possible. Workshops will be allocated 60 minutes, including time for discussion. As far as possible, we will try to be responsive to specific requirements for different workshop formats so please do contact the conference organisers if you have any specific requirements. The maximum audience for each workshop will be 30 delegates, however if you require us to further limit the number of people attending your workshop please let us know by Friday 7th June so that we can allocate rooms accordingly.

All workshops will be allocated into flat rooms (i.e. not a tiered lecture theatre), have either individual or group desks and with standard IT equipment (desktop computer and projector). If you require a specific type of space for your workshop please do let us know by Friday 7th June so we can ensure that rooms are allocated according to requirements.

Revision of Titles and Abstracts
Please review your submitted abstracts and titles and amend as necessary to ensure that these accurately reflect your presentation.

Poster Presentations

We have a range of accepted poster presentations highlighting developments in practice, research and pedagogical approaches. Posters are particularly appropriate for providing information about work that is still evolving or to enable a visual presentation of complex ideas or summaries of work.

There will be a series of poster sessions scheduled throughout the conference. To prepare your poster, please ensure that it is printed and A1 size (85cm x 60cm) and is clearly legible to people standing a metre or so in front of the poster. Remember to include your email and a photo of yourself on your poster as your poster will be on display throughout the conference, so someone might read your poster when you are not next to it, so they might want to find you during the event to chat about your work.

Revision of Titles and Abstracts
Please review your submitted abstracts and titles and amend as necessary to ensure that these accurately reflect the content of your poster.

Please send all revisions to info@iacdglobal.org by Friday 7th June 2019 so that we can ensure that the programme accurately reflects your poster. Please note that we are unable to guarantee that any revisions received after this date will be in the conference programme.

Film Screenings

We have allowed time for both screening of your film and time for facilitated dialogue. All film screenings will be allocated 60 minutes, including time for discussion. You must allow at least 30 minutes for dialogue within your session to allow for as much exchange of practice and learning between participants as possible. The maximum audience for each film screening will be 20 delegates.
All screening will be allocated into flat rooms (i.e. not a tiered lecture theatre), have either individual or group desks and with standard IT equipment (desktop computer and projector). If you require a specific equipment for your session please do let us know by Friday 7th June so we can ensure that rooms are allocated according to requirements.

Revision of Titles and Abstracts
Please review your submitted abstracts and titles and amend as necessary to ensure that these accurately reflect your screening.

Please send all revisions to info@iacdglobal.org by Friday 7th June 2019 so that we can ensure that the programme accurately reflects your workshop. Please note that we are unable to guarantee that any revisions received after this date will be in the conference programme.

Visual Arts Responses

We were delighted to receive a wide range of innovative artistic and interactive responses to our call for participation. If your abstract has been accepted and you wish to discuss the specific requirements for your work, please email info@iacdglobal.org. While there are no pre-defined size limits on artistic responses, space restrictions may apply. Installation assistance will be offered by the team organising the exhibition but transportation costs and insurance are the responsibility of the artist/art-activist.
